“Project Famiglia” is a film that constantly reminds us that we are all human, that we all need love, and that no one should be denied the right to family. The pacing of the film is very well done, allowing the story to develop as it did in real time, while allowing us to connect with the people at the heart of the film. I especially appreciate and applaud the inclusion of the Italian politician’s statements, and the real-life responses to those notions embodied in the segments featuring Jennifer, Daniele, Riccardo, and Lorenzo. Overall, this is a compelling, sweet, and hopeful film. But it also looks directly at the very harsh realities of the intersection of law and policy, and the ramifications for real people. “Project Famiglia” is an important, emotive story. It is also an outstanding first work from Canadian filmmaker, Anita Zvonar.
